Why coatings fail on wood, and what stops it
When wood siding takes on moisture it swells across the width of the board, and when it dries it shrinks back. A coating sitting on top has to stretch and relax through that cycle every year. A brittle or over-thick film cannot, so it cracks — usually along the grain first — and once it has cracked, water gets underneath and starts pushing it off from behind. That is the peeling in sheets you see on older houses, and it is almost never a bad batch of paint.
The moisture usually gets in from the back or the ends rather than the face. Board ends at corners and butt joints are open grain and drink water far faster than the flat face does. Any cut end made during a repair and left unsealed is a wick straight into the middle of the board.
So the work that actually determines how long a wood exterior lasts is unglamorous: seal every cut end, prime bare wood promptly rather than leaving it exposed for weeks, keep the film thickness reasonable rather than piling coats on, and make sure water can leave the wall as easily as it arrives.
Every cut end gets sealed
End grain absorbs many times faster than the face of a board. A replacement piece cut on site and nailed up unsealed will fail from the ends inward, however good the topcoat is.
Nail heads and stains
Old fixings rust and bleed a dark stain up through the finish. Those get treated and sealed during preparation rather than coated over and left to reappear.
Cupped and split boards
Wood that has cupped badly will not hold a coating flat. We will tell you which boards are worth replacing rather than painting a shape that is already lost.
Not too many coats
Build-up is a real failure mode on old wood. Piling on another coat over a thick, brittle film makes cracking more likely, not less.
Paint or stain on old wood
It is worth asking rather than assuming. Paint forms a film on the surface, gives you any color you want and protects well — but when it eventually fails it fails visibly, in flakes, and getting back to a sound surface is real work.
A penetrating stain soaks into the timber instead of sitting on it. It gives you less color choice and needs attention more often, but it wears rather than peels, so maintenance is a wash-and-recoat rather than a scrape-back. On outbuildings, board-and-batten and rough-sawn timber it is very often the better answer.
If a house has already been painted, going back to stain is usually impractical, and we will say so. But on a barn, a shed or a newly clad elevation the choice is genuinely open, and it should be a decision rather than a default.
Working under mature trees
Sunderland lots run to several acres with old growth close to the house, and that changes the practicalities. Limbs overhanging an elevation mean the wall stays wet longer after rain and gets a steady deposit of leaf litter, sap and pollen on every horizontal surface — window heads, trim tops, porch rails.
Those deposits hold moisture against the coating and feed biological growth, so they come off as part of preparation rather than being coated over. Where a limb is actually touching or rubbing an elevation we will point it out, because no coating survives abrasion and it is a cheap thing to have cut back before we start.
Access is the other reality. Tall trees close to the house limit where ladders and staging can safely go, which occasionally means an elevation takes longer than its size suggests. - Why does the paint on our wood siding peel in sheets rather than just wearing away?
- Because water has got in behind the film. Wood moves with the seasons and a coating has to move with it; once the film cracks, moisture reaches the timber from behind and pushes the paint off in sheets. It is very rarely a fault with the paint itself — it is almost always unsealed board ends, bare wood left exposed too long, or too much coating built up over the years.
- Dark stains keep appearing over the nail heads. What is that?
- Rusting fixings bleeding through the finish. It is common on older wood siding and it will keep coming back for as long as the fasteners are left untreated, no matter how many coats go over the top. They need dealing with during preparation — treated and sealed — before the wall is repainted.
- Should we paint or stain our shed and barn?
- On rough-sawn timber and board-and-batten, stain is often the better choice. It penetrates rather than forming a film, so it wears back gradually instead of peeling, and maintenance is a wash and recoat rather than a scrape-back. Paint gives you more color and a harder surface but a more demanding failure when it eventually goes. On an already-painted house, staying with paint is usually the practical answer.
- Do the trees around the house cause problems?
- They add work rather than prevent it. Overhanging limbs keep an elevation damp for longer after rain and drop leaf litter, sap and pollen onto trim tops and window heads, all of which holds moisture against the coating. That gets cleaned off as part of preparation. If a branch is physically rubbing the siding we will flag it, since no finish survives that.
