Desler Painting

Port Republic, MD

Painting in Port Republic, MD

Desler Painting covers every part of a Port Republic house: exteriors, interiors, cabinets and trim refinished. Two things shape the work here. The community sits in two quite different environments — bay-facing cliffs on one side, wooded inland acreage on the other — and one of its neighborhoods requires a cladding most Calvert County houses do not have.

About five miles southeast of Prince Frederick on Route 2/4 — roughly eight minutes.

Exterior painting: wood, cement board, and vinyl

Scientists Cliffs is the reason this town needs its own page. Founded in 1935 by the forest pathologists Flippo and Annie Gravatt as a summer colony for scientists working in Washington, it has always run on its own terms, and a restrictive covenant requires houses to have a wooden exterior. More recently cement fiber board such as Hardie has been allowed as well. Which of the two you have changes the job completely.

Real wood on a bay-facing lot is genuine substrate work, not a trim-and-go. Sealing end grain and open joints matters more than the finish coat, because the coating is what protects the material rather than just coloring it. Cement board is stable by comparison and mostly wants clean preparation and the right primer — but it is not wood, and treating it as though it were wastes your money. Our exterior painting estimate says which you have and prices accordingly.

Inland along the roads running back toward Parkers Creek it is wooded acreage and mostly vinyl-clad houses. There the enemy is shade and mildew rather than salt, and the work is trim, soffits, fascia, shutters and decking rather than the body of the house. Honestly, that half of Port Republic behaves much like Huntingtown, and we would rather say so than invent a difference.

Interiors, and houses that were built as summer places

A good number of houses on the cliffs began as seasonal cottages and were extended and winterised over decades. That produces interiors with small original rooms opening into much later additions, different wall constructions in the same house, and trim profiles that change as you walk through it.

Interior painting here means matching those sections rather than treating the house as one uniform surface, and a whole-house repaint is worked room by room so you carry on living in it. In the inland houses it is more straightforward — standard ceiling heights, consistent wall surfaces, a clean efficient job.

Cabinets and trim

Interior refinishing is the work where the surface changes rather than the color: cabinets refinished, trim stripped or deglossed, and light interior remodeling alongside.

In the older cliff houses this is often the bulk of the job — original millwork carrying decades of paint, where the profile has softened and only comes back with real stripping and sanding. In the newer inland houses it is more often kitchens, where refinishing the doors and frames costs a fraction of replacing them.

Where we work in Port Republic

All of ZIP 20676, which is about 1,378 homes. Ask someone here where they live and they will usually name a community rather than the town — Scientists Cliffs, Kenwood Beach, Western Shores, Governors Run — and they are right to. These are distinct places with their own access and their own character.

Kenwood Beach is around a hundred households on the shoreline with its own voluntary association. Western Shores has a community beach and a civic association, also voluntary. Governor Run Road runs a little over a mile from Route 2/4 to a dead end at the water. Inland, Timberwood Trail and Calvert Crossing are small clusters of newer building on wooded parcels. Scientists Cliffs residents went on to found the American Chestnut Land Trust in 1986, taking on 436 acres that were facing development.

Addresses here do not cluster and some sections are gated, so we plan fewer stops in a day and agree access arrangements before the morning rather than improvising. That shapes how we work, not what we charge — everywhere in Calvert County is quoted the same way. Estimates are free and written: (443) 684-4101.

Port Republic questions

Our post office is on Saint Leonard Road. Are we in Saint Leonard or Port Republic?
Port Republic, if your ZIP is 20676. The post office street name confuses people, but Saint Leonard is a separate community a few miles down the road with its own ZIP, 20685. We cover both, so it makes no practical difference to your quote — but the distinction matters to residents of each, and it is worth getting right.
How do we tell whether our siding is the original wood or the newer cement board?
Usually by the cut ends and the sound. Cement fiber board is dense and cool to the touch and does not give at all under a fingernail at an exposed edge; aged wood does. It matters because the two want different preparation — wood needs its end grain and open joints sealed properly, cement board mostly needs clean surfaces and the right primer. If yours is not obvious we will say so at the estimate rather than guess.
Do we need to arrange anything with our association before work starts?
Often yes, and it is easier done early than on the morning. Gated sections here run vehicle decals and some communities like to know when a contractor will be on site. Tell us what yours needs and we will work to it — it is completely normal in this part of the county and it has never stopped a job going ahead.
Can you refinish kitchen cabinets, or is that a separate trade?
We do it ourselves — it is part of the refinishing work rather than something we subcontract. Doors and frames are cleaned, deglossed or sanded, primed for the surface they actually are, and finished. In a kitchen where the boxes are sound and only the finish has dated, it costs a fraction of replacing them and it changes the room completely.
