Our services

What Desler Painting actually does.

Paint hides nothing. The wall has to be sound before a brush ever touches it — which is why we handle prep, filling, priming and finish carpentry in house rather than sending you to find another contractor.

Formal dining room with dark gray walls, white wainscoting and crown molding, freshly painted

Interior Painting

Walls, ceilings, trim, and kitchen or bathroom cabinets. Furniture gets covered and floors get protected before a single lid comes off. Not sure about color? We will help you settle it before we start.

Two-story home with a freshly painted exterior, white trim and a covered porch

Exterior Painting

Siding, soffits, shutters, and porch rails. We watch the forecast closely, because humidity coming off the Bay can ruin a coat that went on too late in the day — so the prep and the timing matter more than the paint.

Refinished interior trim, doors and a coffered ceiling

Interior Refinishing

Cabinets, trim and doors brought back without replacing them — stripped, filled, and recoated in place. It is the cheapest way to make a dated kitchen look like a new one.

Also part of the job

Interior Refinishing

Bring tired rooms, cabinets and woodwork back to life without a full remodel.

Residential Painting

Whole-home repaints for houses across Huntingtown, Owings and Calvert County.

Cabinet Painting

Kitchen and bathroom cabinets painted neatly, with a hard-wearing finish.

Ceiling Painting

The awkward job most people would rather hand over — done without the mess.

Trim & Door Painting

Baseboards, casings and doors cut in by hand, where brush marks show most.

Interior Remodeling

Light remodeling work alongside the paint — trim, shiplap and finish carpentry.

Who works on your property matters

The owner is the one holding the brush.

Desler Painting is a small, local, family-run business. Dale Miller quotes the job, works the job, and is who you call if something is not right — no call center, no rotating crews you have never met. Most of our work comes from neighbors who had us back for the next room.

Why Desler Painting

Thirty years of doing it right.

Three Decades Of Calvert Substrates

Dale Miller has painted through three decades of local building trends, from 1980s hardboard to today's fiber cement. He is both the owner and the lead painter, so whoever quoted your job is the one holding the brush.

Interior, Exterior, Cabinets — One Call

Most local outfits paint walls and stop there. We also do cabinets, trim, doors and light interior remodeling, so a full kitchen refresh or a whole-house repaint is one conversation rather than a string of different contractors.

Licensed & Fully Insured

Most of the people we work for are not home while the work is going on. That only works if you trust who is in your house — so we are licensed, fully insured, and used to working in occupied homes.

Residential Only, Owings To Port Republic

We do not chase commercial or industrial contracts, which keeps the crew small and the schedule honest. Your kitchen is the job that week, not filler between warehouse projects.

Prep Sized To The Age Of The House

1980s hardboard siding and newer vinyl need different products, and new construction surfaces need caulking and priming before color will hold. We look at the actual substrate rather than quoting off a square-foot table.

We Protect Your Home

Furniture covered, floors protected, fixtures masked. When the last coat is dry we clean everything thoroughly and put the room back together — you should come home to fresh paint, not a job site.

How We Work

From first call to final coat.

First call through final walkthrough with one crew and one point of contact — the same person who quotes your job is the one painting it.

Walkthrough on your street, not over the phone

Dale drives out to the house, whether it is off Route 4 in Sunderland or down a lane in Port Republic. He looks at the actual substrate, because 1980s hardboard and newer vinyl need different products.

Prep sized to the age of the house

Older homes get careful dust control and hand sanding. On newer Dunkirk and Prince Frederick builds the real work is caulking and priming new construction surfaces so the color holds.

Coating inside a Bay weather window

Exterior work gets scheduled around humidity rolling off the Chesapeake, not just around rain. We stop early on damp afternoons, because a coat that cannot flash off will fail within a year.

Walk it together before we load up

You and Dale walk every room or elevation with a light before the truck leaves. Anything you point out gets fixed that day, rather than added to a punch list for later.

Outstanding service. Excellent workmanship. Dale is prompt and conscientious. His prices are fair and the estimated timeline to complete the job was spot on. He gives advance notice of any schedule changes and leaves the job site clean everyday. Would definitely recommend and/or hire again.

Dale painted the entire interior of an older house I just bought - ceilings, walls, trim and doors, including basic drywall repairs. The results are beautiful. His work is excellent and I recommend him highly. He made the process easy for me from start to finish. His estimate was accurate and he completed the work as agreed and on schedule. He saved me from a mistake by recommending that I change one color because the one I had chosen was too light. I'm glad I trusted his judgment.

What a hard worker Dale Miller was. I had 20+ years of wallpaper in my kitchen that needed to come off. It was soooo heavily pasted on. His work was amazing and perfect and he cleaned up the area when he was finished. In addition, he was professional and personable, and his price was extremely fair. Thank you!

Dale is clearly very experienced and did not shy away from the big job. He painted the exterior of my home, including decks, porch, and trim. He is very thorough and detail oriented. I will be a repeat client for sure. Thanks Dale.

Dale from Desler painting was wonderful to work with. Low key and no pressure to use his company. His workmanship was top quality. He took his time and did not rush through the job of staining the outside of my home. He showed me several samples of colors and had good recommendations when I couldn't decide which color to go with. Cleaned up throughly when job was complete and left no residual mess.

Know What You Are Looking At

Signs your walls are asking for attention.

Paint rarely fails all at once, and a surface gives plenty of warning before it does. Here is what Calvert County homeowners tend to notice first.

  • Chalk on your hand after touching the siding

Run a palm along a sunny wall and look for a white film on your skin. That chalking means the binder has broken down, so the surface will not hold a new coat without washing and priming first.

  • Nail pops running down a hallway ceiling

Small round bumps in a straight line mean fasteners have backed out of the framing. It turns up often in 1980s and 1990s homes locally, and it needs refastening before any paint goes on.

  • Trim that has lost its shape under the paint

Mouldings painted a dozen times go soft-edged and the detail disappears. Stripping them back and refinishing brings the profile out again — usually cheaper than replacing the millwork.

Recognize any of these? Most of our work starts with a homeowner who waited one season too long. A walkthrough does not take long, and you get a straight answer about what the job actually needs.

Service Area

Covering Calvert County, town by town.

We work out of Huntingtown and cover all of Calvert County. Most of these towns sit along Route 2 or Route 4, the two roads running the length of the county — which is why a walkthrough is a short drive rather than a scheduling problem.

    Huntingtown, MD

We are based here on Black Oak Court, which puts most of the county a short drive away and means we can start early and still be off your property before dinner.

  • Interior · Exterior · Refinishing

    Owings, MD

The other town Desler has worked in from the beginning. Northern Calvert, and still a large share of the repeat work we take on each year.

  • Interior · Exterior · Refinishing

    Dunkirk, MD

Newer builds at the north end of the county. The real work here is usually caulking and priming new construction surfaces so the color actually holds.

  • Interior · Exterior · Refinishing

    Sunderland, MD

Mid-county, and a mix of eras. Dale looks at the substrate before quoting, because 1980s hardboard siding and newer vinyl take different products.

  • Interior · Exterior · Refinishing

    Prince Frederick, MD

The county seat, and the newest housing in the county — around three homes in five went up after 2000. Mostly interiors and exteriors, with cabinet and trim work on the newer builds.

  • Interior · Exterior · Refinishing

    Port Republic, MD

Southern Calvert, often down a long lane. Worth a walkthrough rather than a phone quote, which is how we price every job anyway.

  • Interior · Exterior · Refinishing

    Chesapeake Beach, MD

Bayfront exposure is hard on an exterior finish. Coats go on earlier in the day here so they can flash off before the evening humidity rolls in.

Common questions

Before you call.

The answers we give most often. If your question is not here, or you are unsure whether your project is something we cover, just give us a call.

Do painters need a license in Maryland?

Maryland requires home improvement contractors to hold a license from the Maryland Home Improvement Commission. Ask any contractor for their MHIC number before work begins, and confirm that they carry insurance. Desler Painting is licensed and fully insured.

What does an exterior repaint cost around here?

We do not publish square-foot pricing, because siding type and prep condition move the number far more than size does. A chalking 1980s hardboard elevation needs much more prep than ten-year-old vinyl. The estimate is free either way.

When is the best time to paint outside in Southern Maryland?

Late spring and early autumn give the steadiest conditions on this peninsula. Midsummer still works, though humidity coming off the Bay means we finish exterior coats earlier in the day so they can flash off properly.

How do I choose an interior painter I can trust?

Ask who will actually be inside your house, and whether the owner works on site. Then ask for local references on homes built in roughly the same era as yours — prep on a 1985 house is a different job to prep on a 2015 one.

What areas do you serve?

We work out of Huntingtown and cover all of Calvert County — Owings, Dunkirk, Sunderland, Prince Frederick, Port Republic and Chesapeake Beach. Most of these towns sit along Route 2 or Route 4. If your street sits just past one of them, ask us anyway.
